What is the Law 25?
Bill 25, also referred to as “Act to modernize legislative provisions as regards the protection of personal information,” represents a significant milestone in cybersecurity regulation in Quebec. It mandates strict rules for businesses regarding the collection, storage, and management of personal information.
- Enhanced Security: Implementation of rigorous measures to protect personal information.
- Increased Accountability: Requirement to appoint a privacy officer and report any security incidents.
- Transparency: Necessity to obtain explicit consent for any action related to personal information.
Failure to comply with this law can result in severe financial penalties that could reach 2% of global turnover or 10 million dollars, and harm the company’s reputation.
This law was born from the need to adapt legislation to the new technological realities that transform our way of working and living.
- Digital Evolution: The increasing integration of digital technologies into the daily life of businesses has amplified the risks of cyberattacks and data leaks.
- Increase in Threats: With cybercrime evolving, personal data has become an increasingly vulnerable target.
- Enhanced Protection: Faced with these challenges, the Quebec legislator has taken steps to enhance the security and management of personal information.
